German Week 2021 Celebration

From the 13th to 30th October, 2021 the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana) organized the “German Week 2021” celebrations to create more awareness about “Germany in Ghana” across diverse sectors of the Ghanaian economy. The celebration spanned over 2 weeks and sought to deepen the relationship between Ghana and Germany and to highlight German engagement in Ghana.

Event highlights:


Doing Business with Germany: 

On Wednesday 13th October 2021, the German Week 2021 celebrations began with a webinar organised by the Ghanaian German Economic Association (GGEA). It involved high profile businessmen in the industry in Ghana and Germany.


African-German Research Cooperation and Postdoctoral Funding Opportunities:

First-hand experiences from fellows and alumina: This event was coordinated by DAAD Ghana and fellows from the African-German Research Cooperation to share their experiences on Tuesday, 19th October 2021:
 

Study and PhD Research Opportunities: 

The virtual event organised on Wednesday 20th October 2021 was primarily an educational online seminar to create awareness on scholarships and grants to prospective masters and doctorate students in Germany. In attendance were fellows and beneficiaries from the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Scholarship, KAAD Scholarship and DAAD Scholarship. The event was recorded and can be watched via the link below.

German Soccer Clinic: 

The soccer clinic was organized by Robert Bosch Ghana, AHK Ghana and the Secretariat for Zongo and Inner Cities Development under the Office of the Presidency of Ghana on Thursday 21st October, 2021. The objective of this soccer clinic was to teach young footballers how to build small goal posts using simple machines and Bosch power tools. The occasion was graced by Head of Mission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ghana, His Excellency Daniel Krull and Hon. Ben Abdallah Banda, the Minister for Zongo and Inner Cities Development. The event took place at the Madina Astro Turf Park, North Legon, with about 70 participants comprising youth from the zongo areas in Madina. 


German Movie Evening: 

On Thursday 21st October, 2021, Osikan Beach resort, Jamestown was the venue for the German Movie “Wilkommen bei den Hartmanns”. The movie night a very casual event where some attendees came along with their families. 


German Car Show: 

A fantastic display of German technology by Robert Bosch Ghana Limited, BMW Ghana, Silverstar Auto Limited and Volkswagen Ghana took place at the Achimota Retail Centre in the two-day event on Friday 22nd October 2021 to Saturday 23rd October 2021. Beautiful German vehicles with spectacular features such as the 2021 Mercedes Benz S-Class 350, VW Terramont, and BMW X3 drew the attention of many spectators and prospective buyers in and around the mall.


German Classical Concert: 

A wonderful performance by the Accra String Quartet coupled with networking characterized the German Classical Music Concert which took place at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel on Monday 25th October, 2021. 


German Business Evening (Cocktail and Networking Event): 

90 guests from German and non-German business community gathered at the Garden in the Octagon, Accra Central on Thursday 21st October, 2021 to connect and network over good music and food as part of the German Week Celebration. The event was graced by the Hon. Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ghana, Mr. Hans-Helge Sander and Mr. Burkhardt Hellemann, Delegate of AHK Ghana.  The event was sponsored by Access Bank Ghana Plc and Universal Motors Ltd (Distributor of Volkswagen Ghana) with keynote addresses from representatives, Mr. James Bruce: Executive Director; Wholesale banking, Access Bank Ghana and Noor Accad, Universal Motors respectively.

 

STEM Event: Inspiring the next generation through STEM

On Wednesday, 27th of October 2021, Siemens Stiftung in collaboration with Experimento Ghana LBG showcased an interactive science session for the future generation as part of the German Week 2021 celebration.

The focus of the STEM session was a green hydrogen rocket, plastic printer, and Arduino irrigation system. During the event, teachers and representatives of educational institutions were encouraged to emphasize STEM subjects and to improve their teaching methods. The event took place at the Impact Hub in Osu.


Go Green Initiative: Bicycle Riding and Tree Planting Event: 

The event was organized and sponsored by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana), DHL Global Forwarding, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) with support from the Gladiators Cycling Club and the Forestry Commission on Saturday 30th October, 2021. The objective of the Go Green Initiative was to contribute to the global reforestation efforts, repairing damaged ecosystems and most importantly mitigating climate changes. 

The event commenced with a bicycle tour from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ghana at Ridge, Accra with about 80 cyclists. Dignitaries present were the Deputy Ambassador of Germany to Ghana, Mr. Hans-Helge Sander, Mr. Burkhardt Hellemann, the Delegate of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana, the Head of the DHL Global Forwarding Ghana, Serigne Mbaye and Mr. Andrew Kankam, Executive Member of the Gladiators Cycling Club.

The cyclists converged at the GIMPA WARC Park for the tree planting exercise. The Rector of GIMPA, Prof. Samuel Bonsu warmly received the guests and cyclists. The cyclists were addressed Mr. Nyadia Sulemana, the Deputy Chief Executive of Forestry Commission and Mr. Mohammed Sahnoon, Executive Member of the Gladiators Cycling club and President of the Ghana Cycling Federation and Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee.  A total of about 200 trees were planted on the GIMPA campus. The event successfully ended with about 170 participants.
